This is the ‘greatest show!’. ‘COME ALIVE!’ The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular is on now at the Empress Museum in Earls Court. Inspired by the 2017 film and musical phenomenon ‘The Greatest Showman’, this new show, with a different story, promises fans the ultimate combination of circus and musical theatre.
Upon entering the museum, you’re instantly transported into a carnival of wonders, complete with circus bills lining the walls, a showman outfit on display, a kooky fortune teller, a snake charmer, a glamorous cowgirl, backstage dressing room stations, a costume department doubling as a merch store, trampolinists, musicians, themed bars, and a diner offering delicious drinks and classic carnival food. Known as the pre-show, you’ll want to arrive early (at least an hour before the main performance) to fully enjoy this immersive experience.
The show itself is nothing short of impressive. A mix of story and spectacle, we follow the Showman (Simon Bailey) on his quest to introduce young Max (Aaliya Mai) to the world of leading a circus. In contrast, her circus performer boyfriend, Korri (Korri Aulakh), harbors reservations about her entering such a world and taking on the responsibility of being a showman. Whether it’s the singers, dancers, or circus performers, the talent on display could blow the roof off the 700-seat Big Top. You’ll never know where to look as you are constantly presented with thrilling feats like tightrope walking, aerial hoops and silks, hair hanging, contortion, fire eating, juggling, tumbling, acrobatics, and more. You’re encouraged to clap, sing, and dance along to popular songs from the film, including ‘Rewrite the Stars’, ‘This Is Me’, ‘A Million Dreams’, ‘Tightrope’, and, of course, ‘Come Alive’. It’s impossible to leave the Big Top without a massive smile after experiencing such joy and awe.
If you want to feel like you’re part of the film and marvel at the incredible talents humans are capable of, this is one show you won’t want to miss. The season has now been extended and is booking until March 2025. I’ll definitely be making another trip to the Big Top.
It’s truly immersive and impressive. I give this show 4 stars.
