The Cruel Intentions UK & Ireland tour transports audiences back to the ’90s, bringing the cult-classic 1999 film—famously starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon—to the stage. The story follows privileged step-siblings Sebastian and Kathryn as they manipulate and seduce their high school peers, leaving destruction in their wake.
We attended the London stop of the tour at New Wimbledon Theatre. Having first seen the production last year at The Other Palace, I returned for a second viewing, hoping that a clearer understanding of the show’s style, story, and structure might shift my perspective. Ultimately, I left with the same impression: while Cruel Intentions undoubtedly has its devoted fans, its execution didn’t quite land for me.
Despite its nostalgic appeal, the musical struggled to integrate its iconic jukebox pop soundtrack seamlessly into the narrative. While some of the audience eagerly responded to the first notes of each song, my lack of familiarity with all the tracks made the transitions feel clunky, and at times, the musicality didn’t fully translate. Additionally, the sheer number of characters and romantic entanglements led to a noticeable lack of development—both individually and in their relationships—leaving me wanting more depth.
The pre-show announcement and opening scenes strongly emphasised the musical’s ’90s setting, aiming to contextualise its societal values and attitudes. Yet, despite this framing, some jokes and stereotypes felt outdated and, at times, uncomfortable. Rather than reinforcing these elements, I would have loved to see the story’s foundations preserved while adapting it for a modern audience—challenging outdated tropes rather than leaning into them.
That said, there were undeniable moments of joy. The cast’s infectious energy and undeniable talent elevated the production, and I had to resist the urge to dance in my seat or sing along—because, theatre etiquette. But the party atmosphere on stage was unmistakable, and in those moments, I couldn’t help but smile.
For some, Cruel Intentions may offer a nostalgic and fun night out, but for me, it ultimately fell short.
To echo Kathryn’s infamous words: “Are you in? Or are you out?” Personally, I’m out.
